Retaining Walls

Retaining Wall Design

Permanent cantilever, gravity, and semi-gravity retaining walls — earth pressure, overturning, sliding, bearing, eccentricity, and global stability.

What it does

The Retaining Wall tool designs and checks permanent cantilever, gravity, and semi-gravity walls. Enter the stem and footing geometry, backfill and foundation soils, and loading — the tool computes lateral earth pressures and evaluates every stability mode.

Checks include overturning, sliding (with optional shear key and passive resistance), bearing capacity, base eccentricity (middle-third / Meyerhof), and global slope stability through the wall. Active and at-rest pressure options handle yielding and restrained walls.

Output is a formatted PDF report with the pressure diagram, resisting and driving force/moment tables, factors of safety, and bearing-pressure distribution.

Methodology

NAVFAC DM-7.02, AASHTO LRFD, and Bowles

Capabilities

  • Cantilever, gravity, and semi-gravity walls
  • Rankine and Coulomb earth pressure (active / at-rest)
  • Overturning, sliding, and bearing checks
  • Base eccentricity and bearing-pressure distribution
  • Optional shear key and passive resistance
  • Sloping backfill and surcharge loading
  • Global stability through the wall
  • Seismic (Mononobe-Okabe) earth pressure
  • Formatted PDF calculation report

Scope

Covers static and pseudostatic design of gravity-class walls. Counterfort walls, soil-nail and tieback walls, and structural reinforcement detailing are planned for future releases.
